Creating a Modern Country Farmhouse Living Room.

Monday, May 20, 2013
So I just got back from a super whirlwind of a trip to Utah helping my mom put together her new house. We had a lot of fun working with the pretty things she already owns, and adding a few new pieces to pull the room together.

Most of the large items and even the accessories she already had, she has pretty good taste actually. But starting with a big blank slate is super intimidating, and knowing how to pull a space together with things you already have without going out and buying all new can make things even harder.
Enter fresh eyes, i.e. me.

Here is what the space looked like before she moved in.

Pretty details, but the space is actually really small. Maybe 12x12. It's the formal living room, plus family room, plus with her open floor plan it's open to the dining, kitchen, hallway, and first floor rooms.
That means you can't really go anywhere in her home without seeing this room.

When we were deciding what look she wanted she said country, farmhouse, fresh, updated, and of course pretty. So with all those in mind we set out to pull the space together.

She already had the couches which are so comfy, but really rustic. So pairing that with fresh and modern was kind of the hard part.
Here is what it looks like after.
Before I got there she had found two cabinets to flank the fireplace to hold components and fill in that awkward space.

The rug I absolutely loved. It was a Homegoods find, for a steal I might add.

We searched and searched for a round table that would ease all the rectangular lines. We ended up with this one from Ikea.

Have I mentioned my love for tufted linen anything? The side chair was another Homegoods find.

I couldn't get a good shot of the curtains but the blue velour panels are from Ikea, as well as the floral burnout sheers we used to fill in between the panels. Taking pictures of sheers is super challenging.
End table from World Market.

The lamps were probably my very favorite. They are from Black Goose Designs in West Jordan. They are HUGE and solid concrete. I am in love.

We filled this old beat up copper bucket with a bunch of hydrangeas on a whim. I kind of love it on the hearth.

I think we ended up with the exact feel she was looking for, and kept it simple & fresh so it will be easy to mesh this living space with the rest of her upstairs.

Here is the full list of what we bought:
Window treatments
Area rug
Throw Pillows & throw blanket
Coffee table
Side table
Side chair
Lamps & lampshades
Fake hydrangeas & greenery

May I add that the photos don't do this room justice as it turned out gorgeous. Jenna has a remarkable talent for finding just the right item to enhance a room. We love this room. Thanks, Jen.

We're did your mom get the 2 cabinets that she put on either side of the fireplace? My living room looks very similar to this setup and I've been looking for something to put on both sides of my fireplace. I have some pictures and design ideas that I took to someone to build for me, but it would be super if I could find some already made!

Hi! Like Audra Jahm, I would love to know where your mom got the white cabinets that are on either side of the fireplace. I've been looking for something similar for awhile!
